How to Choose a Ketubah: Style, Size, Text, Framing & Timeline

To choose a ketubah, start with your text and your officiant's requirements, then pick a design style you both love, a size that suits the wall where it will hang, and whether you want it framed. Order about 2 to 3 months before the wedding so there is time to review the proof and receive it well before signing day.

With so many beautiful options, choosing a ketubah can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks the decision into five simple parts: style, size, text, framing and timeline.

1. Choose a style you will love for decades

Your ketubah will hang in your home long after the wedding flowers are gone. Look for a design that reflects you as a couple and fits the way you like to decorate.

Tree of Life

The Tree of Life is one of the most beloved ketubah motifs, symbolizing growth, family and roots that run deep. Explore our Tree of Life ketubahs, including the rich, warm Burgundy Tree of Life Ketubah.

Jerusalem

A Jerusalem skyline connects your marriage to the heart of Jewish history and the age-old hope to "remember Jerusalem" at life's happiest moments. See the Jerusalem Blue Skyline Ketubah and more Jerusalem ketubahs.

Watercolor and botanical

Soft florals, olive branches and painterly textures feel romantic and timeless. Browse watercolor ketubahs, or see the Twin Olive Trees Ketubah, two trees growing side by side.

Modern and minimalist

Clean lines, geometric details and lots of white space suit contemporary homes. Explore modern ketubahs.

Papercut

For texture and depth, our papercut ketubahs layer intricate papercut over hand-painted watercolor. They range from $464.75 to $506, in sizes from 15x15 to 24x24 inches.

Tip: Each of you should save three or four favorites independently, then compare. The designs you both chose are usually the right direction.

2. Choose the right size

Size depends on where the ketubah will hang and how much text it holds. Our giclée prints come in two formats.

Format Sizes (inches) Works well for
Square 14x14, 16x16, 18x18, 20x20, 24x24 Balanced designs; above a sofa, bed or console
Vertical 9x12, 12x16, 16x20, 18x24 Hallways, narrower walls and gallery groupings

Size tips

  • Measure your wall. Above furniture, art often looks best when it spans roughly half to two-thirds of the furniture's width.
  • Consider your text. Long texts in two languages, such as Aramaic and English, read more comfortably at larger sizes.
  • Think about signing. Larger sizes give signers more room. Smaller sizes are easier to transport to the venue.

3. Choose your text

The text is the meaning behind the art. We offer seven options: Reform, Conservative (with the Lieberman clause), Orthodox/traditional Aramaic, Interfaith, Same-Sex/LGBTQ+, Secular/Humanist, and custom text. Every design works with every text.

  • Ask your officiant first. Orthodox and Conservative rabbis usually require a specific text.
  • Interfaith couples often choose a text that honors both backgrounds. See interfaith ketubahs.
  • Same-sex and nonbinary couples can choose inclusive, gender-neutral language. See LGBTQ+ ketubahs.

Read a plain-language description of each version on our ketubah text options page, or dive deeper in Ketubah Text Options Explained.

Gather your personal details

You will need your names in English and Hebrew, your parents' names (optional for most texts), the wedding date, and the city and state. Do not worry if you do not know your Hebrew names: translation and Hebrew transliteration are free. If your ceremony starts after sunset, tell us, because the Hebrew date changes at nightfall.

4. Decide on framing

Many ketubah shops ship unframed only, which means a separate trip to a framer after the wedding. We give you the choice.

  • Framed: Black, White, Silver or Gold, ready to hang. Framing adds $13.75 to $22.55 depending on size. Browse framed ketubahs.
  • Unframed: Ideal if you want custom framing, matting or a particular glass. Prints start at $108.90.

5. Plan your timeline

A comfortable timeline keeps the ketubah one of the least stressful parts of wedding planning.

Quality checklist

Whatever you choose, look for these signs of a ketubah that will last:

  • Archival paper (ours is 340 gsm, 21 mil watercolor paper)
  • Pigment inks rather than dye-based inks, for fade resistance
  • A digital proof before printing
  • Free shipping anywhere in the USA (we ship flat in rigid, thick cardboard)

Find your ketubah

Choose the design that makes you both smile, the size that fits your home, and the words that reflect your marriage. We will handle the Hebrew, send your proof within 24 hours, and ship it ready for signing day. Browse all ketubahs.

Frequently asked questions

What size ketubah is most popular?

Mid-sized options, such as 16x16 or 18x18 square, or 16x20 vertical, suit most walls and give signers comfortable room. Measure the wall where it will hang before deciding.

How far in advance should we order a ketubah?

About 2 to 3 months before the wedding is comfortable. It leaves time for your officiant to review the proof and for printing and delivery. Rush orders are often possible by email.

Can we choose any text with any design?

Yes. Every design can be paired with Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Interfaith, LGBTQ+, Secular or custom text.

Should we order our ketubah framed?

If you want it ready to hang right after the wedding, yes. Our frames come in Black, White, Silver or Gold. Choose unframed if you plan to use a custom framer.
