Same-Sex and LGBTQ+ Ketubah: Egalitarian Texts for Every Couple

Framed rainbow wildflower wreath ketubah at a joyful wedding celebration

A same-sex or LGBTQ+ ketubah is a ketubah written in egalitarian, gender-inclusive language, so two brides, two grooms or nonbinary partners can make the same promises to each other as equals. It is widely used in Reform, Reconstructionist and Conservative communities, and any design can be paired with an inclusive text.

How the wording is different

Traditional ketubah texts assign roles to a bride and a groom. Inclusive texts replace those roles with mutual promises:

  • Both partners commit to love, honor and support each other
  • Gendered words such as "bride" and "groom" are replaced with names or "partners"
  • Hebrew wording uses the correct grammatical forms for each couple, including gender-neutral options
  • The same date, place and witnesses' signatures as any ketubah

Frequently asked questions

Can same-sex couples have a ketubah?

Is there a gender-neutral Hebrew text?

Yes. We can use nonbinary Hebrew forms. Let us know your preference when you order.

Who can sign?

That depends on your officiant. In most liberal communities, any two witnesses you choose may sign, along with the couple and the officiant.
